卡图卢斯

卡图卢斯(公元前约87—约54),古罗马诗人。出生于意大利北部的维罗那,青年时期赴罗马,殷实的家境使他在首都过着闲适的生活,并很快的诗才出了名。他传下一百一十六首诗,包括神话诗、爱情诗、时评短诗和各种幽默小诗。

Catullus

· Born c. 84 B.C.E. Died c. 54 B.C.E. · Born in Verona, Northern Italy, but spent much of his life in Rome.

· Catullus has left us 116 poems of various lengths written between roughly 62-54 B.C.E., although there is debate as to the chronology of their composition (i.e. in whatorderthey were written and when).

· Many of the poems concern the poet’s passion for awomanidentified as ‘Lesbia’ (whoserealname, according to the author, was Clodia).

· Catullus likely chose the name ‘Lesbia’ because of his admiration for Sappho, the Greeklyricpoet of Lesbos, whose poetry he also imitated.

· But Clodia did not apparently like Catullus and his poetry shows all the stages of romantic love from deep attachment to jealousy, despair, bitterness and, finally, indifference.

· Catullus’s love poemswouldinfluence Ovid (43 B.C.E.–17 C.E.) who in addition to the famous Metamorphoses wrote The Art of Love and other love poetry.

· Catullus would also be an influence on the later Italian poet Petrarch (1304-74 C.E.) as well as poets in various European traditions including WilliamShakespeare(1564-1616 C.E.).

· One particularly famous phrase derives from Catullus’s work:

‘odi et amo’ (trans. ‘I hate and I love’), a succinctdescription of the pains of romantic love in which it is possible to love and hate simultaneously.
