人物简介

在耶鲁大学读书时，遇到第二次世界大战爆发，应召入伍，服役空军。退役后担任夏季巡回剧团的舞台经理，后又升为导演，1947年到1949年在哥伦比亚和南卡罗拉纳城的剧场活动。1949年担任NBC电视导演，制作不少电视片。1955年从影，导演改编电视片的《马蒂》荣获奥斯卡最佳影片、最佳导演、最佳男主角三项金像奖，奠定了一流导演的地位。后来又导演了《鸳鸯谱》、《白发红颜未了情》等杰作。到了60年代，他的艺术抱负终于抵不过现实的困扰，作品由新而俗，到《莫负今宵》等片推出，便令人有摇头三叹之感。
