《圣常啼传》原作者系藏传佛教格鲁派创始者宗喀巴大师,是一部在藏族文学界上影响极大的诗歌传记。其大体内容载于略本般若经《八千颂》(《八千颂》:一部佛经,全书二十四卷,三十二品。主要内容归纳为法性、空性、智慧等佛教原理,通常称般若经)的部分卷中。这部传记主要讲述了一位名叫圣常啼的佛教弟子为了学到般若经,一生经历了无数坎坷与磨难的故事。宗喀巴大师的佛教知识渊博,尤其对佛教各派的观点研究透彻,破解了般若经的许多奥秘,同时看到了般若经对整个佛教的影响及作用。因此,在宗喀巴大师不仅写了很多有关中观论的研究论著,还撰写了诸多赞美中观论的诗歌,《圣常啼传》为其中之一。
