多年生，通常多少被粉，少数种类叶丛基部具鳞片。叶矩圆形至倒披针形，基部渐狭窄，边缘具小牙齿，被柔毛或小腺体而呈粗糙状，稀无毛。伞形花序近头状；花直立，具极短的梗，苞片通常基部稍膨大或微呈耳状；花异型；花萼钟状，辐射对称；花冠漏斗状，喉部有或无环状附属物。蒴果角质，近球形，与花萼近等长或稍短。
