创作背景

据说当时在匹兹堡担任仓库点收员的福斯特，发起并组织了一个业余男声五重唱团。其中有位团员的妻子叫苏珊·肯脱莱脱，相貌十分美丽动人，除了一头金色的卷发外，她爽朗、活泼、直率的性格也非常惹人喜爱。作者福斯特正是以此为灵感，创作出本曲的。歌中表达了主人公对苏珊娜的刻骨铭心的爱。为了这份爱他可以献出自己年轻的生命，为了爱人黄土埋身也心甘情愿。他远离家乡，四处寻找心上人，冒着酷暑顶着烈日心却像冰一样的冷，但此心不变。
