序言

I am always amazed by the power of perceptions, that is,by the power of what people perceive things to be.His-tory is a succession of mental images linked by time.Years later, when people recall an era, what float to mind are those images, those classic moments. My intenet in writing this book has been to extract certain moments and present them as key to what happened over thispast thirty years in China.Over the last four years I have writ-ten two volumes that narrate China'S evolving reality from abusiness or commercial perspective. This book is a condensedversion of those two volumesI-have reduced 700.000 words down to 60,000 and added 250 photographs. The thirty years from 1978 to 2008 have marked a periodof rapid economic ascent for China.China’S abrupt emer-gence may indeed be the most notable phenomenon in globaleconomics for these decades.Today,as I thumb through thephotographs,I am yet again astonished at the changes inChina——the photos tell the story no less starkly than the text.I say to myself,“Is this really the same China?Did we reallydo this?”From the photo of blood-red fingerprints of farmersat Xiaogang Village, pressed onto a document declaring theirdetermination,I read the distress and the resolve of ordinarypeople. From the image of students at Tian’anmen unfurlinga banner that says with such gladness.H Hello Xiaoping!” lcan almost hear the welcoming shout of history.
